Our view of the team
MANIFESTO FOR A LIVING TEAM
The team itself is a living entity
It evolves, reconfigures itself and seeks its own balance. It aspires to grow. It regenerates. It is dynamic. It nourishes and is nourished in turn. The arrival or departure of a member shifts its centre of gravity. A change in context can profoundly alter its dynamics. Its life unfolds through periods of stability, transition and readjustment. A living team continues to evolve and continues to evolve and keeps the relationships within it alive.
Every team is unique. No two are alike
It is far more than the sum of its members. It has an identity of its own, a history, often a long one, and the imprint that history has left. It has its own dynamics, its own way of working and a life of its own. So the same person will not occupy the same place or interact in the same way in two different teams. Every team is unique as a whole.
Only respect for and recognition of each team member’s uniqueness build solid teams
The more fully each person can take their place in all their uniqueness, the more solid the team becomes. Alterity means recognising each person’s uniqueness in its entirety. Complementarities can then come fully into play. Oppositions, too, are a source of richness without weakening the group. The team builds on this richness rather than on the lowest common denominator.
The team provides stability and is a reliable resource
In an unstable environment, the team becomes a source of stability. It provides firm landmarks. It becomes a resource for its members, bringing support, energy and continuity. When external reference points shift, it maintains internal stability. This anchoring enables its members to face challenges together, adapt, evolve and keep moving.
The team is the keystone of the organisation
Like a keystone, it allows forces to remain in balance. It is the first level of the collective, where people connect with the organisation and act together. This is where the organisation’s intentions take shape in collective action. The way the team works directly affects decision-making, innovation, adaptation and the capacity to act. An organisation is made up of teams that interact with one another in ways that are both visible and invisible.
The team is where people rise above self-interest in service of the common good
Individual interests do not disappear. They become part of a shared purpose that goes beyond them. The team is a place of communion in pursuit of the common good. Each person contributes to the collective beyond their own interest. The team goes beyond simply acting together. It serves something greater than itself.
